Clearing the way for rivers/roads

Having come back to CC3 after a long break (thus the flurry of near daily questions from me, thanks to all for your assistance and patience!).
I seem to remember there was some way to clear our symbols "automagically" when laying roads/rivers, some sort of command or technique that "cleared the path" of symbols,. allow the river/road a clear "channel" to be seen , does this ring any bells for anyone?
I've checked forums, and the Tome, but can't find what I am looking for, likely missing some critical keyword.
Thanks for any help!

You can draw polygons in the gaps and use Symbols in Area from the Draw menu, but that requires that you've already drawn the rivers so you can draw polygons to add the forest between all the tributaries.
There may be a way of selecting all the symbols next to a line, but if there is I have forgotten it myself.
Check out select nearby symbols and delete nearby symbols.
Bingo, the select nearby symbols command was the one I was thinking of, although reading it now I had forgotten that it wouldn't work with the symbol polygon tool (need to do symbol area fill, or hand place) if I was dealing with "dense' trees
Thanks guys!
See also the FORESTX command, but that requires you to lay in the rivers and roads before drawing the forests.
thank you for that, I was unaware of FORESTX, that will be very helpful
