[WIP] Mining village map

I am shamelessly trying to emulate the sheer loveliness and (inevitably at this stage) style of Mike Schley's astounding maps.
I'm going for a rather dull and dirty mining town here hence the low contrast that I may improve later. What I am really looking for at this stage is how to make it busy and more 'lived-in'. At the moment it looks so clean and clinical.
All help and suggestions gratefully received.
Also I really dislike the roads so any pointers to road tips and tutorials much appreciated.

A light or two. I grew up in a small town with ranches and farms nearby. There were a few street lights in what I felt were odd locations. Near the movie theater, next to the town swimming pool. No lights next to the court house.
