"Preview" button in Line Style dialog window doesn't work

As the title says, when the "Line Style" window is open, the bottom option (below New, Edit, Help, etc.) is "Preview", but clicking this seems to do nothing. My cursor turns into an hourglass for half a second, but that's it. How is this function supposed to work normally?

As a related question, is there a good way (other than the Preview button if it worked) to see what different line styles will look like? The quickest way I've found is to open a drawtool and edit it, changing the line style to different ones and then clicking OK to close the properties window and see the result in the drawtool details window, but this is still somewhat cumbersome.

What the preview button does is to redraw the map, which is why you get the little hourglass for a second. If you're editing one of the line styles defined in the list, Preview will show you how that edited style on the map will look after you click OK. If you're not editing a line style, there is no effect.

You can use the Edit>>Change Properties menu item (or the MPEDIT or CHANGE commands) to directly modify the line style of an entity, but it's not really a preview because you need to remember to click undo to revert to the original style.
