Community Atlas - The Bleakness - Ashburton - Darklands region and Darklands City
Here is my first foray into Sue's Darklands overland and city styles.
First the region. I have used a few symbols from Weilink style, for rocks, cave and ruins, henge and lighthouse.

Here is the very beginning of the town.
The only site of ‘normal’ life in The Bleakness is the village of Ashmorton, which serve mainly as a base for fishing fleets from Justice island, and those who cannot abide the confining rule of the Hunters on Justice Island. So Ashmorton is a fairly lawless place with many individuals pulling in all sorts of directions.
Progress on Ashmorton. The market stalls (mainly fish) are from CSUAC 2.0 and Dundjinni archives.
@Loopysue I would like some market stall and docks, and dirt roads.
Market stalls were on my mental list ;)
I think the outcrop shadow you drew there is on the wrong sheet. Try moving it to Outcrop shadow bottom, where it will be blurred and blended properly.
Just a happy little map then? 😉
There is a style that looks kind of similar to this, I think its called City Streets, can't remember the annual, that has some market stalls that would probably fit with these symbols. There are also stalls in the free source content you can add.
@kevbeck43 I have already done the latter - I was just flagging Sue as she wants to know what needs to be in the second package
Here is the final map and notes for the Ashburton region. I will submit it when I have finished the town.
Thanks for this style, @Loopysue
Ashmorton Region
Desanty Bay: The major source of income for the town – great fishing.
Gaetlight: Another source of income – it provides safe guidance to vessels from the town, and when extinguished an a fire lit elsewhere, it provides loot from wrecked ships.
Fort Mankie: A ruined fort – who know what may lurk there
Doom Chasm: A very deep chasm, with cave entrances lining the edges of the gorge
Margree Henge: A great place to hold your sacrificial rites.
Shinem Tower: A ruined sorcerer’s tower. And the locals keep away from it.
Gloom Woods: Good timber, but a pack of dire wolves makes life interesting
Hoarlee Cavern: the home to an extended family of cave bears. It has a mysterious wall at the far end, covered with paintings depicting a fiery comet destroying a large city, and people fleeing into shelter of a cave, led by a tall crowned figure.
NB: Any resemblance of names to persons living, dead or zombiefied is totally, utterly and completely co-incidental. It's true that there are a lot of villains lurking.
And progress on the town itself, mainly Darklands City.
Still need a few more labels, house features and general dirtying the place up.
I see I have covered the street connecting the waterfront street with the streets further back. It will be fixed when i put up my next WIP.
They look good, Quenten :)
That blur on the border ribbon was meant to be just a tiny shadow to make the ribbon look raised, and might need a bit of adjustment.
I rather like the big blur - Makes the map more sinister, IMO
The final, Atlas ready map of the Ashmorton region and Ashmorton (5Mb version in Gallery)
The name has been altered to Ashburton. And I have now submitted both maps. Here are the map notes for Ashburton village.
Ashburton
The only site of ‘normal’ life on The Bleakness, is in the village of Ashburton, which serves mainly as a base for fishing fleets from Justice Island, and those who cannot abide the confining rule of the Hunters on Justice Island. So Ashburton is a fairly lawless place with many individuals pulling in all sorts of directions.
There are three main ‘industries’ – fishing (legitimate); base for intrepid/stupid adventures – both outfitting and buying any ‘treasure’ – at a goodly commission of course (opportunistic, but legal); and wrecking (opportunistic and illegal).
Most buildings are old and weathered, some barely habitable and quite a few ruined.
Following are a few sites of interest:
Black Billy’s Tower: the official lighthouse – and it is occasionally not lit, and a false light further down to coast is lit when the wreckers are in business.
Sailors’ Hostel: A one star dormitory establishment for housing itinerant sailors, and the odd adventurer. Property rights seem to be suspended in this ‘establishment’, and the whores don’t care who sees what they do.
Port Master: black Billy himself, the key figure in the wrecking business. The authorities on Justice Island would give a large reward for proof that he is the mastermind of the wrecking business.
Babes and Booze Inn: the social hub of Ashburton. As its name suggests, plenty of booze, punch-ups and busty babes for afters.
Bosun Ruth’s Court: Here the forminable ‘lady’ Ruth holds a kangaroo court dealing out summary justice to those who are caught infringing the few laws of the town 0 stealing from the bosses, not paying debts, and killing the wrong people. There is only one penalty – a one way trip to Tom’s Cemetery.
Captain Smee Lodging: The only really decent house in Ashburton, and luxuriously furnished inside. It is of course the home of the town’s ‘Mayor’, Captain Smee. And he runs everything that is legal and illegal.
Maps are now in the atlas. Thanks Quenten.
Excellent !
