Server Move
We will be moving the forum to a new server. This is expected to happen around noon CET on Monday 21.06.2021
There won't be any actual downtime but due to the fact that DNS changes takes time to propagate over the internet, there will be a transitional period for a few hours where some people will still be going to the old forum even if the new is operational. Anything you post in the old forum during that period will not make it over to the new one, since that will be after data has been transferred. Once I switch over I will put up a banner on the old forum notifying you about this, so untill you see such a banner you can post as normal and be confident that your posts will make it over to the new server.
There won't be any major changes to the forum. This is just a server move, not a forum update. You will notice one change, and that is that I have gotten social logins set up. That means that if you prefer, you can now log into the forum using your google, facebook or twitter account. If you don't already have a forum account, one will be created and linked to the social login, and if you already have a forum account, the server will ask you for your current password to link the social login to your current forum account (your email address is used as the key, so if your social account have a different email than your forum account it will result in a new account instead of linking to your existing one). Note that if you do use social logins, your forum account will have its username set to the name on the social account, this applies to both new accounts and existing ones.
Comments
Can we continue to use our current login ? I prefer not to use social media logins for here.
Yes, this is just an additional option for those that want that, gives you one less login to remember. But it is completely optional.
Good as I like to keep my logins separate.
I'm fuzzy on how servers work. Does this mean we'll have to go to a new site, or do we still log in here?
Eventually, you'll see no difference. The changes are all far behind what you can see and all your logins, etc. will work the same.
If you are seeing this message, you're now using the forum on the new server.
Hurrah!
So... what are these new buttons at the end of the responses?
Just facebook and twitter sharing buttons. They showed up when I enabled social logins.
Before I go and accidentally share a whole lot more than I mean to, do you end up sharing just the comment you clicked on, or the entire thread?
You share the comment, but because the way facebook generates that preview of theirs, they grab what's at the top of the page for the preview, so the preview will actually be from the top of the page, but the actual link in the share will be to the comment.
Thanks for explaining, Remy :)
Everything a-ok at my end so far.
Has the move resolved the error issues when opening a topic, or sometimes when typing a reply on the previous Forum server? I've not seen any such message boxes since coming back here for the first time today certainly, though the automated draft-saving system seems to be functioning as normal (and keeps periodically telling me so). Which are Good Things if so!
It should fix those issues.
Should have said too that the various topic pages and category lists seem to be loading a lot faster than previously as well, presumably also part of the reason for switching servers.
As far as I can tell. I did have to make a second attempt to upload a jpg to my gallery; however, it could be my local ISP's slowness recently.
