Instead of a white background and white grid, I went with black. The reason being the map is underground and black seemed to work better (and I'm not printing), so the black grid disappears. Thanks Monsen.

For a prettier map, I would recommend option 2 or 3 in my post though, although this is far more complicated than just using a solid colour background. Also, the grid cannot be properly applied until the map is finished.
That was my reason for going with the black background, I would've preferred to Ungroup and Trim, as I am a fairly good AutoCAD draftsman and I do this all the time (though slightly different language, Explode instead of Ungroup) ... but it is an ongoing game and I draw it as I go and need the grid for practical purpose and couldn't do that. You could use explode as well. Both Explode and ungroup will accomplish the same in this case. But since the grid is a set of grouped lines, ungroup is the natural choice here.
