What causes the BMP to show the RED X of Death?

I open my covering force map dated 20200906 shows up with the RED X of death on the BMP. This is not totally bad because I have recovered from this before by just dragging the BMP bag in. But my first step was to go back to 20200822 which also has the RED X of death.
ARGH! Is it just me?

Did you move/delete the bitmap on disk? CC3+ doesn't embed it in the map, it references the orginal image file, so if that is moved/renamed/deleted, then CC3+ won't find the reference it is looking for, and display the red X.
Nope. When I construct the map, I move it to the Game directory for the appropriate game. In this case c: Documents\DAD\Games\11th ACR\CF Battlemap\Covering Force Battle Map 1 which was placed there on 20200706 and it still there and opens fine in Corel PaintShop which is where I combine all the maps after I scanned them in.
SIGH.
Can you use the Info -> List command on the red x symbol in the map and check the FileName reported? Do it match the location of the image exactly?
It does indeed.
No, it doesn't. Look at the file name. CC3+ looks for a file called "Covering Forces Battle Map.bmp", but your file is named "Covering Force Battle Map1.bmp". That file has been renamed after being inserted.
I really don't like the file size of that image though. CC3+ can't address more than 4GB ram, and that file eats up a huge chunk of it. Being unable to load it due to running out of memory will also result in a red X.
Hm. Interesting. Well. The good news is the map is mostly finished. I will just rename the file to "Covering Forces Battle Map.bmp and bring it in again. I am just refining some game things that really don't require a great deal of precision.
I do have a lot of applications running at the moment.
I deleted the old sheet, saved and close the application. Renamed the sheet. Reopened CC3. Map came up find. Inserted the map which also worked fine and the map lines up well with all the objects, so that's saved.
Very strange. Its been loading with that map for quite a while without any issue, as recently as a no more than about a week ago, and then today, blammo.
Nothing I can do about the file size. The map was 3 map seets wide by 5 or so tall, so I cut it down a lot when I scanned it in.
Your file will be a lot smaller if you open the bmp file in an image editor and save it as a png, with no loss in quality.
It won't necessarily change how much RAM is required to handle the image data, but it won't do any harm.
Thanks. I didn't think you could insert a PNG via Insert File?
