Sheets

Thanks for the heads-up about the new forum, it looks outstanding.
And I just ran into a problem for the first time, I imagine I'm doing something not quite right:
I am in the process of creating the Underdark under the Dales in FR. I added three sheets last night, ("UPPERDARK," "MIDDLEDARK," and "LOWERDARK") and when I opened the map this morning, the sheets were not there, including all the entities I had copied there. I just now created them again, saved the map, exited CC3, reopened the map, and guess what? They ain't there...

I am using a Sony Vaio laptop, Vista Home Premium OS, and copied in some of the entities from the FRIA.

What am I missing?

Are you absolutely certain you did put entities on the sheets? Sheets disappear if there isn't anything on them when you save/reload the map.
To make sure they stay, you should put something (even a temporary object) on each sheet.

Um... I thought I did, but I had never done it before. Let me try it again.

Yup, you were right, got it! Thanks!

Not to pick nits or anything, but why didn't I know that? I had looked in the CC3 manual, and in the help file, but found no mention of empty sheets being deleted when saved. Maybe a "New sheets must contain entities or they will be deleted upon saving." note after the instructions for the 'Add' button in the 'Sheet Indicator' section of the help file. Just a thought.

Again, thanks, I have discovered sheets/layers to be a little challenging, but now it's great to have this pretty new forum to fall back on after mis-steps. Yahoo! groups are more than a little clunky...

    Hi Leroy,

This is mentioned in the FAQ, along with a quick way of putting a non-intrusive entity on each sheet:

On all our CC3 templates, we have a tiny entity which stops the sheets disappearing. It's only older ones which don't have this. If you have devised your own templates you should do the correction on the templates so that it propagates to all drawings you do based on that template.

  • It's great to have this new forum, i finally can stop receiving the mailing list from the yahoo group. And as a bonus, i just learned something new today :)

    Thanks Simon.

  • i have a question relating to this:
i would like to use a different set of sheets and layers and yes i know that this is a lot of work as i would have to change the default layer/sheet-properties of the symbols. But thats ok and can be done continuously...
But i also noticed that unused sheets are deleted so i was wondering how i could edit the dafault-layers/sheets? Are they somehow part of the templates and if so how do i create a new one with the new sets of sheets/layers?

    greetings and thanks

btw: or is this a realy stupid idea to create my own set of sheets etc? Maybe i don't consider all consequences...

put a '.' period down in the left corner, under the map border.

So when you save as template, those sheest will still exist.
  • ok, so they won't disappear when i save an existing map. But i don't want to create all the sheets and layers again when i start a new map so that's why i'm asking how i could change the starting set of layers/sheets...

You'll need to create yourself a template with the desired sheets. Basically, just make a clean map, with the sheets you need, then save it as a *.fct file in your Templates directory. Use the appropriate subdirectory dependig if it is an overland map, dungeon, etc. When you start a new map based on this template, you then get your predefined sheet setup.

Another option is that instead of using a template, you just have a map file with the desired sheets in it, and then, in any map, do a insert file, and inserts that map, you will also get the sheets from that map set up in your drawing. You can then delete the inserted map (or just undo the insertion), and you should still have the sheets.

In both cases above, you need to do as JimP suggested to keep the sheets on the map/template. I prefer just to insert a point at coordinate 0,0 instead of a period though.

Maybe there is a macro command you could use to make a macro that sets up the sheets for you as well, but I couldn't find a macro for creating a sheet. Maybe someone else knows of one.
  • I did mention 'save as template'.

For them to exist when I create a map, I usually put some part of the map, not a place holder, on a sheet.
  • ok so I have to put a point on every new sheet I create. I'm not fan of such improvised solutions and somehow expect more than this when I buy software. But nevertheless nice software...
  • You only have to do it once per template.

Then when you want to make a map with those sheets, just load that template.

I have several templates I created for my use. They are on my Crestar site.

One thing I noticed recently: Creating a new sheet and placing an image on it via Draw -> Insert File then saving and closing the map isn't enough to keep the sheet in map the next time I open the file. Have any of you noticed that as well?
  • jaerdaphjaerdaph Traveler
Weird. I can't seem to reproduce the problem now. Which I suppose is a good thing. :)

We are sorry about this - it's a bug really, having to put a placeholder in to keep a sheet. Empty sheets get stripped out. Supprisingly, it's very hard to fix. It is on the list, but with low priority.

Its ok Simon. Putting a dot on a sheet to keep it is better than not having the sheets.

  • Hello, I'm hoping someone can tell me what I am doing wrong.

I've drawn my landmass, and created a sheet to make a white/blue fringe around the landmass.
After the fringe appears, I goto Draw Menu and select Point. I then go down to the bottom left hand corner and place the point. After which i save my file.

When I close and reopen, the file is right back where I started, with no fringe even though I placed and saved the point!

Is there a step I am missing?
  • MonsenMonsen Administrator 🖼️ 46 images Cartographer
Is this fringe caused by an effect?
CC3 by default loads maps with effects off, so if it is an effect, you need to turn effects back on to see it.
The trick of putting a point on the sheet to keep it is only needed to be able to keep empty sheets though. If you put anything else on it (Which you must have done to get the white/blue fringe), the sheet won't disappear, and you don't need to put anything else on it to keep it.

Also, have you made sure the fringe isn't obscured by another sheet. When you draw something, CC3 always displays it on top of everything, even if it is supposed to be behind something. To make sure everything is as you want it, always to a redraw before you save. This will immediately reveal if what you just drew is really below something else (And if so, check your sheet order)
