Using any MDR with FT3+ consistently crashes
Hi,
I'm trying to use FT3+, v. 3.5.4 to use an MDR height map file as the basis for a new map. I choose the MDR via the "File->New->Binary File" elevation option and after I choose the MDR file and choose "Finish", FT3+ consistently crashes. I initially thought it was a problem with the file I was saving from Wilbur, however after lots of testing I confirmed FT3+ will crash if I use any MDR file, even one FT3+ created.
I reverted to using FT3, v.3.0.21 and the same MDR files work fine, so it is something specific with this version of FT3+.
I'm using Windows 11, on an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-core system with 64 GB of RAM, and an AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT graphics card with 16GB of ram, in case that matters. I tried turning off the GPU, in case there was some strange interaction there, but FT3+ still crashes.
Thanks,
Brian

I'm not having the same problem as you, so maybe we are doing it slightly differently to each other. Here is how I would import an MDR file. Is this also how you are doing it?
Use New from the File menu.
Pick Binary File and click Next.
This opens the Binary Data dialog.
Hit Chose Elevation File and in the following dialog (also called Binary Data), navigate to your MDR file
Remember to change the file type at the bottom of the Select Binary Altitude File dialog to MDR Files (*.mdr).
Pick your MDR file and click Open. I have used the example MDR file in CA155, which if you have that annual can be found here: ProgramData\Profantasy\CC3Plus\Annual\Issue 155 - The One Day Worldbuilder\Jerion\Jerion complete.mdr
Whether you have picked the CA155 example or your own MDR file, the file name and it's path should now have been added to the Binary Data dialog. Note that this is an absolute file path. That will be important at the end of this process.
Clicking OK takes you back to the first Binary Data dialog, but with your chosen MDR file named across the middle.
Hit Next, and then in the Summary dialog click Finish.
Now your world should appear.
Because the filepath is an absolute reference, moving or deleting the MDR file will cause the FT3+ world to lose it's data source, so it is best to then burn the height data into the file using Burn In to Surface in the Tools>Actions submenu, then save the .ftw file. This will prevent the data going missing if you move or delete the source MDR file.
Please try this process yourself, and then let me know if it worked this time.
Thanks.
That is the exact process I am using. As I mentioned, it works fine with the older FT3. It's just the latest FT3+ version that crashes. I tried the MDR file from the Annual 155, and I get the same results - it crashes as soon as I click "Finish".
I finally decided to try completely uninstalling and reinstalling FT3+ and now it works fine. That was very strange. Not sure what might have happened to the original installation to cause MDR file processing to cause a crash every time - the rest of the program was working. But, at least it is all working now.
Cheers,
Brian
It will probably remain a mystery forever now, but at least I know what to suggest trying with anyone else that has a similar problem.
