ClerconClercon Betatester Traveler
Ok here is my latest town map. It is for a campaign I'm writing. Map is made in CD3 and some effects are applied in Photoshop.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Now I only have six more villages to do for the campaign.
The numbered places are as folllows (for those interested):
    1. Town hall, pub
    2. Ferry administration, inn
    3. Ferry administration, inn
    4. Pantheon, temple of all gods (mainly for three)
    5. Keep
    6. water mill
    7. Abandoned temple ruin.
  • I must admit, i really like the style you chose for your town. It's almost cartoony in a way with the use of very large lines. The use of shadows is also nicely implemented.

    Good job sir.

  • Beautifully done.
    Very much like the colors.

Am curious how much is CD3 and what part is photoshop.

    Thanks for the feedback!
@Henrie61 - The map is completely done in CD3 when it comes to the terrain and houses etc. The only thing done in Photoshop is changing the colours (I think the CD3 original ones are a bit too bright, adding the border (it is the same border as in the 2012 December style I made for profantasy, but I don't really know how to add it in CD3, so I'm doing it in PS instead), applying some shadow to the forest and running the whole map through pixelbenders oilpaint filter (pixelbender is a free addon for PS). I try to add the map as it looks straight from CD3 later so you can see the difference (am at work now).

OK here is the map as it comes out of CD3, so you can see the difference before I start working on it in Photoshop.

    Both maps are very interesting.
Your Photoshop version if of course bluffing. The map looks like it comes out of a fairy tale book.
IMHO, with some nice textures and strategic effects the pure CC3 could yield a more finished map, although it is quite adequate for gaming as it is (with labels added).
  • I love this style. I have been hand-drawing some villages to get and idea of what I am after and here you have hit the mark. I like the flow.

    Thanks for the comments,
@Joachim, you are absolutely right when you say that the map could be completed in CD3 with a bit more work on textures and effects, but I didn't put the time into it because I wanted to finish it in Photoshop. I want the colours and feeling of the map to work with the other maps for the campaign.
@Scott, thanks, over at my blog (http://mappingworlds.wordpress.com) you can find a tutorial on the steps I do in PS. So you can try it out for yourself.

Sorry, I didn't want to mean that YOU should do it, it was a more general statement for users that don't own PS. You chose to use Photoshop and the result is proof enough that it is a great alternative.

I uderstand, no problem. Here is the fcw file if someone else wants to play around with it.
  • Thx for posting the FWC file.
    Saved it.
Maybe when I have time I will reengineer it to see how you did this.

Well it is all Joachims fault that I've neglected my duties at home tonight and instead been sitting in front of the computer trying to make a fairy tale book of the map. Well honestly I got inspired by your post Joachim so I thought it would be fun to see what the map would look like in an old book. You should see this as a snippet from a travellers guide in the Etrakien world :). If you like to see a larger versin, where you actually can read what the pages say, try this link http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/027/d/0/farjvad_the_tale_by_clercon-d5sy9tc.jpg
  • Well, can't say I beg your pardon for forcing you to neglect your duties :)
    A real piece of art!

The map is really nice but seeing it in that storybook context is an absolute delight! Bravo!

  • *drools* now it's even more awesome...! Fantastic work Clercon.

Thanks for the support everyone, this one has made me eager to do some more story book pages :-) the book pages I've used aren't my own work. I got them after supporting the lamp post guild kick starter. However I've made some small changes to it, making it into two pages instead of one.
  • Don't want to hijack the thread, but there I found a tutorial for making old books (not as nice as the one you have here) in photoshop. (http://www.pstut.info/photoshop-tutorials/open-book-tutorial/).

I'm sure that having something like this as a template in CC3 would be very popular.

I'd call that a bases loaded home run!!!
