Blacksharde League Finished

Well I finally settled on a map style and a map for the second Christmas present. I'll go back to the other maps I started along the way and finish them next. I took the border off because as Dogtag pointed out it looked to big and over powered the map itself. This one was particularly fun if not a pain in the butt because I jumped around on so many maps just to get to this picture that was stuck in my head. I wanted a kingdom that was sort of over expanded. I wanted to map to appear to have recorded information from several different writes. You know as thought the terrain was repainted in a few times here or there but someone never bothered to change the names or move names around much. In any event, I appreciate the critique even though this one will not get changed. Got to move forward with Christmas and still have to matt and frame this baby.

Very nice map! I especially like the area around King's grotto up in the north east corner. Would love to see a version in higher resolution as well :)
  • Hmm... I do not know how to give you guys a larger image. I mean I have a huge image, but it won't attach here and I have no where to put it.

    PS thanks for the compliments.

One way would be to share the fcw file, if you're ok with that :)
Or you can start up an account on deviant art and put it up there.

Another option is to sign up for a Dropbox (2GB storage free) and use it to publicly host files. Or Google Drive. There are tons of free hosting options around nowadays.
  • Awesome..I'd really love to see a higher resolution image of the North East
  • Very nice. Love the format. Very well laid out.

  • Very nice map, especially the North with the Grimforge and the Mountains.
  • Thanks guys. Everyone says they want to see a higher resolution. I am going to try PDFCreator and see what i can do because even if I change the pixel width and height, the resolution does not seem any better to me when saving as a JPG.

Well, this image above is only 667 pixels wide. I think people would like to see the image at 2x or 3x wide (or even bigger, I suppose). It's a big map, which I presume you're printing on that plotter of yours as a poster?

Dude, I gotta say, that's amazing. Heads and shoulders above anything I've ever done, I can tell you that. And I'd like to throw my hat into the Northeastern-Section-Fan-Club ring. Very nice, down to the fonts you used. Hard to believe you haven't been using CC3 longer than you have. I also really like the way out laid out your mountains in general.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks for the kind words Dog. Yes, this is officially my third map. In regards to that resolution, I just do not know how to increase it. Maybe one of you smart heads can lay it out for me please.

I don't know about the smart heads but this is the little bit that I understand. you may have already tried this. Also, be sure to save any and all work before doing this. I believe one of the more common causes of a CC3 crash is trying to save to an image file that's too big.

To set the size of your exported PNG file:
    1. Select File>Save As from the menu bar.
    2. Select PNG Bitmap File from the Save as type drop-down list in the Save As dialog box.
    3. Click the Options button in the Save As dialog box.
    4. Enter the dimensions you'd like to use in the Width and Height fields of the Bitmap Options dialog box.
    5. If you want, you can choose a PNG Compression setting. I usually try Maximum first but it could freeze up or crash the program. If that happens, I restart and choose Default. image
    6. Also, if you want, you can click the Save button at the top of the Bitmap Options dialog box. Then, in the future, you can just select settings from the drop-down list to configure the options for that image (and then you can tweak them).
    7. Click OK to close the Bitmap Options dialog box.
    8. Click Save to export your map to PNG.
It can take a while to process a large bitmap so be patient. image image

    Cheers,

  • Yeah but doesn't that come out to a prefixed base resolution of like 96 pix or something? I am driving towards trying to export the base resolution at 300pix (regardless of how large I make the image). is that possible?
  • did you mess around with the contrast/saturation in your map...the color just really pops...if so, did you do those edits in CC3 or Photoshop?

My guess — and that's all this is — is that it will result in whatever ppi your computer is set to. Remember, for screen viewing, which is what the folks above were asking, pixels-per-inch is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if it's 72 ppi or 96 ppi. On a computer screen, 800 pixels wide is 800 pixels wide.

Okay, that's not quite true. If someone has a high screen setting, like my !@#$*% work laptop, which is set to 1920x1080 and can't seem to manage other resolutions without making everything blurry as all get out... *ahem*... Sorry.

As I was saying, if someone has a high resolution, the image will seem smaller on their screen but you can't possibly save it to a size that will make everyone happy.

    Just my $.02

  • Yes I did bump the contrast and the brightness a little. I only did that because my large format printer wants to print the map really dark. I think I have that part ironed out now. I just need to work on the larger base resolution.

Maybe someone else who's done a lot of printing can help you with the print resolution question. Sorry. Totally over my head there.

    ~Dogtag
  • Ok on the printer settings Dog. I will look into that too. In regards to the visual settings, maybe I just crop out a large section of the North East and post just that for you guys to look at. I am curious about what's so special about the North East anyways. To me it seems like any other part of the map. I am not sure what the fuss is about. Any other areas that you all want to see closer?

Well, I like the way you laid out the terrain up there, particularly the forests and the lakes/rivers. And I like that island in the lake. It just looks really good.

And, seriously, have you tried setting the map to a larger size and saving it, maybe 2x? Did it not work?

    ~Dogtag
  • The detail is fantastic. What a wonderful map. Good work.
  • I agree with the rest, its a great map.

And a +1 for the bigger map.
Come on, you can do it :-)
  • my freebie web site is at: http://www.cwahi.net/ unlimited size. There is site there over 100 gigabytes.
  • You own that site Jim?

Nope, I just have one site there. Mine is less than 20 megs. Sign up is free, a small 21 pixel text banner served up by the server, not part of of your pages.
  • My site there is Nessie of Mars sort of a joke site, but I intend on putting some 'SPACE: 1889' maps and thigs there to.
  • You can also easily set up a free wordpress blog site..thats what i did. Your allowed 3GB on the free version, but I've posted like 50 full resolution images and have only used up 2% of my allotted space.

  • Ok broke this map into larger pieces <--- that sounds funny huh? In any event some of you wanted to see better close ups so here goes:
