  • AWESOME! Love your mountain placement and that little island.

But...the grid is a little intense, adding a subtle transparency effect might help.
  • This is a great map!

I agree about the intense grid, butI also think that the frontier (red dashed line if I read that correctly) is a bit artificial. I would expect a border to rather run along natural features like the mountains or a river or something like that. Then again, look at some of the borders in the USA or Africa...

That brings up an interesting creative decision for the world maker...were borders artificially constructed by some external authority (as was the case with the western US and Africa) or did they naturally evolve (much like the eastern US)
  • I've been watching 'How the States got their Shapes' on the history channel. Even the Eastern States shapes got lots of arguments, and some are still on going in court.

Mostly the borders were over water. The western states have less water, and so the borders are more regular.

The state borders for Utah, Colorado, Idaho, California, and Arizona have more to do with gold than water.
  • You could blend in the terrain a bit more on the northside of your map. The transition from grass to hills? is a bit sudden

Beautiful. I absolutely love how you did the forests and wooded areas, and of course the amazing mountains. And the... well, the map's beautiful.

Is this from a particular R.E.H. story?

  • Bonjour à toi,

    Fantastic map!
This is a great style and the way you use it is really artistic, especially on symbols placement.
I just found that it's quite dark and though it gives an interesting ambience, I (and my printer) prefer lighter tones.
For a digital version it's however flawless (except perhaps for the repeating pattern of the marsh/scrub/whatever on the top).

I find these map "paintings" done with Herwin's style really wonderful. Great work!
  • Thanks for posting the map! Although I might not use it directly I can now at leisure zoom in and see how you did things and 'reverse engineer' it so I can make my own maps better.

Krom, They say mimicry is the greatest form of flattery so I hope take it that way. I dissected your map layer by layer to see how you created it, and then built a similar but different version of it from the ground up. Thank you very much for posting your FCW of this map. I learned a lot of great things with walk through. All take a peek and let me know what I should revise. One question I have is how do I put a border around the whole map in CC3,without doing it in Paint?
    Thanks again, Ken

Oh I forgot to turn on the effects before I pasted it in here, See if this helps out.
  • Damn, this promisses to be a very fine map.

Think the transition between the (green) forest and the rest of the map is to sharp.
    Needs a fade effect.

Like the way you combined the two types of forest.
  • Looks like the terrain types are simply on the same sheet.
  • KenGKenG Traveler
Updated the map above, I didn't have the sheet effects on.. duh

Still some terrain types are on the same sheet , try to simply put each terrain type on a seperate sheet.

Are you talking about the brown hills and the green hills near the NE tower?
In this template they both are placed on the hills sheet. How do you place terrain on a specific sheet? I know that symbols can be forced but I Don' t know how to do the terrain. thanks
  • I think it happens at some more spaces. Either way you could use change properties and change the sheet.

Alternatively what I did with this style is add some extra sheets in the sheet window and add various terrain types to them by going to

    > All mapping tools
    > Advanced
    > Select terrain type
    > Click properties
    > Change sheet.

Thanks Moskva, that will be helpful.
I reviewed all of the layers and the only one that has multiple different images on it was the hills layer. So I replaced some of the brown hills with wasteland. I also adjusted a few of the blurs on the forests.
This has been a great learning experience thanks for the help.

Beautiful! THe only thing i'd think about is the trees on the northern edge of the southern lake. They seem to be standing in the water. Is that on purpose?
  • KenGKenG Traveler
    Oh good catch. Thanks
