I think the colour pallet is excellent. I also like the texture on land. What comes to mind when I look at the ocean is mud cracking or basket ball skin...not ocean...sorry.
The intensity of the texture on the ocean feels much stronger than the intensity of the texture of the land, which makes for a bit of a jarring effect.
You have definitely softened the texture in the oceans and it doesn't look cracked. I think part of the issue is because the texture in the first impage pops more as the water colour darkens. There was a light/dark contrast. You have changed that and it makes a big difference :-).
Ah, the darkened water is more contrasted because of the blend mode I used in the ocean contour sheets. I'll experiment a bit with that and see if I can get it to stop doing that.
Those earth tones are proto-desert fills. I think I need to work on those a bit.
Just wondering if perhaps the "granulation" on the textures had a greater difference between the land and water, that might help too (with, say, a smaller granulation for the land textures, as the larger seems to work quite nicely for the varying ocean depths currently). That could probably be done by simply rescaling the bitmap textures at personal choice, however.
Essentially, yes. I'm calling it granulation because that how I'd describe it in other, non-artwork, fields 😁. It's how grainy the texture seems, where "grainy" isn't meant as a pejorative term.
Yes, that's it Sue. It helps make the water texture look more like broad-scale ocean waves, and the land textures more like the smaller-scale surface undulations you find there, at least to my eye/mind.
[Now just wait for the chorus of disapproval from everyone else 😉]
I'm so sorry to hear you caught the flu. I hope it's mild and passes quickly.
Overall, I like the color palate, but I'm a little confused about the bright orange near the top center that's surrounded by the darkest fill. What kind of terrain is that?
Ahhh, makes sense. I do see more texture to it when I click on the image, though the resolution for images on the Forum probably doesn't do it justice.

How am I doing for colour and texture in the ocean and landmass?
Please be honest.
I think they're great. I gasped when I saw the oceans. It's quite striking.

Sadly, I agree with EdE about the ocean.

Thanks everyone :)
I'l work on it some more.
How about this ocean version? It's the same texture, but with the pattern broken up a bit.

The light/dark earth tones you added also great.

Less contrast in the deep water now. I was using 'Glow' as the blend mode, but now I've switched to Multiply.
Is it possibly a little flat now I've done that?
I can always adjust it at any time up to publication, but at least we are rid of the cracked mud look now.
Is it possibly a little flat now I've done that?
Actually, yes. The previous examples made the different depths actually feel like different depths, but now it just looks like different colors.
I was afraid of that.
I will try a few more blend modes...
It looks like Glow is the only one that does that. I've reduced the opacity to 90% so it's not quite as distracting.

Do you mean the size of the blobs?
Essentially, yes. I'm calling it granulation because that how I'd describe it in other, non-artwork, fields 😁. It's how grainy the texture seems, where "grainy" isn't meant as a pejorative term.
I accidentally deleted the land mass earlier, but is this what you mean?

I caught flu over New Year, so I phaven't done much but mess around with a few more fills.
Let me know what you think :)

LOL! Probably not very good lava ;)
Thanks - I'm already feeling a bit better now.
The dark fill is volcanic terrain - also not my best.

It's only a low res screen shot. Here's a closer look.
Much clearer what it is now that I can see the texture.
I will probably rework them all several times before the end.
This should give a better idea of the style I imagined. Since I've nearly finished with the textures I'll complete that job before I do any symbols.
The brownish-reddish grass texture marks a mountain chain that currently has no mountains.
Sue, will you be adding in textures for all 3 types of forests, and perhaps woodlands as well. Plus wetlands, ice, tundra, wastelands etc.
They might be symbols... or they might be textures. Possibly both. I'm not sure yet. I seem to have some kind of brain fog going on.
Hopefully it's not a Brain Cloud. Has anyone asked you to jump into a volcano?
LOL! No, but I do like watching volcano live streams. Kilauea is erupting again right now.
