I'm not sure what I managed to do, ergo what I need to do to change it back, but now when I try to select and object (e.g. for erar,move/rotate etc) it prompts for a layer and eos nto select the object. How do I resore the default behaviour?

Type SELBYD (select by dialog) on the command line and rpess enter. An aborted macro probably changed your selecting method to "Select by layer".

So... if I actually want to select everything on a layer I type SELBYL ? do what I need to do, and then SELBYD to get back to where I was.

And if I want to select by sheet I can do that too by typing SELBYS?

Yes to the first one, but there is no select by sheet command.

Oh well. That could have been really handy to have, but never mind.

    Thanks, Remy :)
