Perspectives... Am I missing some stuff?

Okay, I'd been putting it off for a while... but the Lite Mapping Challenge over at the CG got me thinking about 3D mapping, so I decided to see if I could finally get a handle on Perspectives, so I could make a 3D village.

I was going through the first tutorial, the one room house, but a couple of things didn't make sense to me.

I figured out how to do the floor okay, after a couple of tries, but the wall is confusing. The tome says:

12. Press and hold [shift] down . Move the mouse.
You can see a line cursor that attaches to the
end of the wall. The cursor has three possible
positions.
13. Move the mouse until the line cursor is attached
to the inner edge of the wall. Lift your finger
from [shift] then move the mouse again.

I followed these instructions, but it never really looked like the image in the tome. On top of that, every time I made a wall, it had a weird corner, like the artifacts you sometimes get when using the bevels.

2nd thing, after my wall was up, I'm supposed to open the furniture, and look for a particular fireplace. I searched the symbol catalogue three times, no fireplace. There was a stove, but no fire place. Am I missing some things?
