Those are the totally famous 'Shessar cliffs'. Shessar developed a technique to create cliffs, and its contained in a tutorial she wrote, which is available from the resources sticky thread at the top of the forum
You're right Scott, it does look more like a stone wall. I'm still playing around with different methods of depicting elevation. I want this village to look like it sits on a small hill with past glaciation exposing the rock beneath and the aquifer feeding the spring... I think I have a lot of experimenting to do. LOL
Almost three months later and I've finally finished this map. I'm a bit late but wanted to thank everyone for the kind thoughts. I'll be handing it over to Remy in a day or so.
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. There are a lot of rocky outcroppings and springs where I live and I wanted to see if I could capture that in this map. Also, my best friend owns a farm and their only water source is a spring. They still have the original spring house over it, though they have modernized by adding a pump to get the water into the house. So, I pulled my inspiration for this from my own environment.
I love the subtle shading of the elevations, particularly of the eastern path before the denser woods. Exactly what I was going for in my Stair of Girion map recently - but you've come much closer to the mark than I did. Gorgeous all the way around!

Are you going to put shadows on those buildings?
It's a beautiful village!
And well worth the wait
FCW now submitted to Remy.
