Continents in FT3

I'm not quite happy with the separation and shape of continents generated with the various fractals. They tend to appear like one long, continuous continent that's broken up by bodies of water. After unsuccessfully painting altitude values on an ocean world (the results were chunky and didn't mesh well when fractalised), I'm thinking of using another application (maybe GPlates) to map out basic continental shapes and then importing the data. So:
1. Does FT3 import raw files, it seems to be able to export them?
2. Using whatever import that works (colour to altitude or direct data import), can I then get the fractal generation going on the imported continental shapes to make them more natural looking, or will they retain the overly smooth and chunky altitude values of the original import from GPlates?
3. Should I give painting the altitude values another go? Do I simply need more practice in learning how to fine tune the initial painting?
