The Cartographer's Annual

I started this discussion about The Cartographer Annuals.

Here is my addon to the new April CA about CD3. It's a symbol of mill building in two color variations.
Feel free to use and share them.

  • I've got one more question about drawing tool Construcion in April CA 08. Can we make the buildings with this till the CD3 is out? Did you use it for the map? There is nothing about the tool in attached PDF documents. I really like the new Annual.

No, I didn't use the Construction drawing tool in this map. It's just one I usually include in all styles, because it's handy if you need to draw a quick construction line. That's all it does: Draw paths in a glaring color for temprary outlines, sketches, etc.

Nice symbol! I'd perhaps include a more obvious roof ridge to make it appear less flat. :)

Just as a heads-up: the May Issue of the Annual 2008 is now available for download.

Quick Note: I forgot to put up the new LOADREL command mentioned in the mapping guide on the laboratory page. I'll be there tomorrow.

The file is available now on the laboratory page (subscription required).

Just to let you know, the previews for the June and July Annual issues are now up.

I'm looking forward to June's. Joseph Sweeney's DD3 video tutorials are excellent if you haven't checked them out yet: User Tutorials.

June and July CA are really hot. I'm very looking forward to them. Ad tutorials: Joseph Sweeney made excelent tutorials which taught me much. If I should say which tutorials I long to see - video tutorials about creating objects. I mean how to create variety of symbols for DD3 or CC3 using texture maker, paint shop pro, gimp etc. How to create monsters and figure symbols, animals, furniture, nature and city symbols etc. It would be really great and it would support CC3 comunity.

  • Is there any way to purchase the annual's without a credit card??
    Reason for my question:
I'm from germany, where credit cards are still not very common. This means, i don't own one...

Would i really need to get me a credit card to purchase the annual's?

Or could i, at least, buy them at SPIEL '08??
  • TheElfTheElf Newcomer
Kaozwind: Debit card, paypal, etc. works as well, if I know it well :)
  • RalfRalf Administrator, ProFantasy 🖼️ 18 images Mapmaker
If you want to pay with something else but credit card from Germany, you can always contact me directly. I can arrange alternative forms of payment.

And of course we'll be at Spiel.

I watched the new June CA 08. Even if I'm not a beginner, I learned few very useful tricks. Big thanks for Joseph! However, when I'm playing the first part file (CA18_VideoPartA.wmv) and go few minutes (or seconds) back or forward in the movie, the movie freezes. This is only in the first part, the others are right. I guess it is a CRC error of WMV file or something like that...

If noone else is having this problem (and I haven't heard anything about it yet), I guess the error occurred when you downloaded the file. Does it work, if you re-download?

I just tried watching the tutorials now, and have the same problem.
Different media players react differently, but basically, it is impossible to jump to different locations in the file. You need to see it from start to end.
As ShadoWWW reports, it only happens with part A.

I ran the file through VirtualDub, and it complains that parts of the file is missing after analysing it.

I also notice that a lot of mountains, including a volcano, was inserted between the end of part A and the beginning of part B. It looks like something is missing here. Especially since he refers to the volcano later, but we never saw him place it. I could understand not showing how he placed every single mountain, but since we don't see the volcano being placed either, it definitely points to some of the file is actually missing. Only a very small portion though, but this would also account for the other problems with the file.

Same issue when using Windows Media Player 11. As reported, only part A. I downloaded both CA_18_CC3VideoTutorial.exe and the separate wmv files. The "symptoms" are the same.
By the way, the tutorial is excellent. Joseph has done a great job. He explains the various functions in a straightforward yet quite comprehensive manner. So far I have only been interested in dungeon and battle maps. With the tutorial, Joseph has opened my eyes and shown me that the creation of overland maps will enhance the quality of my future campaigns and can be fun.
People have (sometimes) been complaining about the CC3 suite being both a complicated and not very well documented set of mapping tools. With the annuals, Joseph's movies and the upcoming user manual, I believe that CC3 will actually be the best documented mapping tool on the market. If we add the Ultimate Tome of Mapping (which will be updated to cover CC3) this will - in my opinion - definitely be the case.
And CC3 is not that difficult to use. I purchased CC3 and some of its add-ons at the end of January and have only started mapping recently (this weekend to be honest). Thanks to Joseph's DD3 videos, the tutorials posted by ShadoWWW and Neoknight, the annuals and Ralph's support on the forum as well as in the mail list, I was able to achieve good first results. True, it takes time to learn the use of the various tools and sheet effects in an efficient way but it's worth the effort.

What I'd like to see once CD3 is released: A video tutorial for mapping cities.

I've uploaded the fixed version of the Part A video file for the June issue of the Annual 2008. This should now be pauseable and rewindable.
  • MonsenMonsen Administrator 🖼️ 81 images Cartographer
Thanks. Now it works nicely, and the missing 1,5 minutes are there as well.
  • jaerdaphjaerdaph Traveler
Thank you, Ralf. It works just fine now for me too. :)

  • About lights in new CA: I can Add lights, Edit lights... But how can I delete a light?
  • MonsenMonsen Administrator 🖼️ 81 images Cartographer
The lights appear as entities on the map. Use Lights -> Show Light Symbols to make these entities visible, then use the regular CC3 commands to manipulate them, like erase to delete them.

  • Any news on the upcoming issue(s)? A preview of CA30 would be nice.
  • RalfRalf Administrator, ProFantasy 🖼️ 18 images Mapmaker
Yes, sorry for not doing this earlier. Preview for CA30 is now up.
