So, many people seem to enjoy joining various mapping challenges, so I thought why not do something like that based in the atlas.

I was thinking on posting a challenge with regular intervals, related to the atlas, but without any requirement to submit the map to the atlas. While I do hope people will submit these maps to the atlas, I want the challenges to be open for everyone.

The maps will need to follow the usual atlas guidelines, of which the most important one is to only use symbols/fills from official ProFantasy CC3+ compatible products, or one of the four community packs (CSUAC, Dundjinni Archives, Vintyrie Cartographic Collection, Bogie's Mapping Objects). For those following the challenge without intending to submit to the atlas, that is probably the only concern (I want everyone to stick to this to make it fair).

Won't be any prices, but if this is a success, I will list the winners (decided by community vote) on the atlas website, and perhaps add a fancy "title ranking system" where winning several challenges gets you a higher title. Meaningless, but just a bit of fun.

    June Challenge - Floorplans

The theme of the first challenge is a building floorplan. It should be a single story (the building may be multi-storied, but for the sake of the challenge, only one of them should be mapped, I'd rather see one nicely detailed floor rather than 5 generic ones). The emphasis here is also on building floorplan. It shouldn't be a dungeon or crypt or a village square, but a building.

The building you wish to make the floorplan from should be found in the atlas, there are a bunch of village and city maps there with buildings that can be mapped. The purpose here is to pick a building and map that actual building, not to make a generic floorplan that can be used anywhere, so please adhere to the shape and measurements of your chosen building when making the floorplan, all that is part of the challenge.
Any building in the atlas is open for the take, unless it is already marked as reserved, which you can check in the atlas and in this thread.

Once you have found your building, please mark it clearly on the map and post a screenshot in this thread (feel free to crop the part of your map you post to only show the relevant neighborhood), and state where it is from. The purpose of this is just to reserve your building to avoid two people grabbing the same one (I suppose the chances for that are slim though, unless you pick one of the more prominent ones). Then make a thread in the Show and Tell category showcasing your progress. As long as nobody posted here before you claiming the same building, or it was already marked as reserved in the atlas (the show reserved areas button that appear below any atlas map that has reserved areas), you can just start mapping it, no need to wait for an ok from me.
Note that some maps have some interesting buildings marked on the map, it is up to you if you want a building like that, or an anonymous one.

If you wish to submit your map to the atlas, you can whisper me the .fcw in your WIP thread when you are done with the map. Note that even if you don't intend to submit the map to the atlas in the end, you should still pick an atlas building to map to follow along with the challenge.

And please let me know what you think about this. Is it interesting to post such challenges every now and then with a specific focus?

Great ides. I totally support this. I would like to do the ground floor of the manor in the Forlorn Islands, Sir Lionel Poncegraf's Fief - lovely man that he is.
How long do we have to finish?

I was thinking 1-month challenges, so you have the entire month of June. I posted the announcement a few days early because I wanted to give people time to prepare, but it isn't a problem if you start now.

Fun idea. I am up to my eyeballs in projects and promises right now, though, so I don't know if I'll be able to participate or not. I hope the turnout is great, though!

i've been doing floorplans like crazy for my homebrew campaign lately. Unfortunately, I cannot share or use for the atlas due to personal fills and symbols. But...i will try to make my next few CC3+ friendly and fit them in a few villages. i've already done several floorplans already, but sure, why not. i'll get back to you, Remy, as to where my map can fit in the atlas once i've got an idea what i am going to do.

Okay, i can use a church in a village in my world of Forynth, so i've found that i can use the church in the village of Dwyan in Hadrian's Dworn Valley map on Berenur for the Atlas and myself. I'll reserve this and while i'm at it The Lonely Well Inn, also. I'll be using the DD3, Bogie's and CSUAC symbols, as usual.

I probably shouldn't join this challenge because I'm really backed up on my to-do list. However, I can't resist a fun mapping competition and since this isn't due until June I should be able to fit in one more thing. :)

    So, it is officially June.

I hope to see many people participate in this, and remember, you can participate no matter if you plan to submit your map to the atlas in the end or not. The challenge is the main thing here, more maps for the atlas is just a bonus for those that want to contribute.

Just above a week left here now. Still hoping to see a few more contribution here. And remember, it is just a fun challenge, as stated above, you can partake without intending to submit to the atlas. And for those working on maps, would love to see some WIP.

I am trying to finish the city of Khelaphet so Jerry Thiel can place his many maps of buildings in the city here. i am still proceeding slowly with Poncegraf manor, however.

So, June is over, and while there where fewer participants than I hoped, we did get some nice maps.

Not at home while writing this, I think I got them all, but please give me a note if I forgot anyone, it is not intentional. I'll set up a voting as promised in a day or two, next time I have the time. When deciding for the best one, I encourage you to not just look at the floorplan itself, but also how well it adheres to the building shape from the village/city map.

And more buildings to come very shortly - my Manor House, and Jerry's Customs House in Stromphe. At least the competition spurred a number of us to do more buildings (and me to finish the city of Khelaphet)

There are some really lovely maps entered here.

I only wish I'd been able to work through my Buddhist temple OCD thing in time to generate a building symbol worthy of being mapped!

Never mind. Maybe we will have another of these later in the year?

Another one might be interesting. One thing that I've noticed about many online communities is that participation tends to be at its lowest in the June/July time frame. Another such contest later in the year might improve participation.

June is one of the worst months at Cartographer's Guild as well, and it only slowly picks up till about September/October. This situation is probably down to holidays and great weather. To good to be sat inside!

Possibly the best times are late autumn and early spring? The post summer/ post Christmas blues seem to get a lot more mappers motivated to indulge in a bit of fanciful escapism - a project to take a person's mind off the crappy weather and the relative lack of excitement to be had in the real world.

We saw really low participation on the FB Monthly challenge also. Alas I've been too busy with work to even think about having fun.

I hope we can continue to do challenges even if participation is low. This one had given us some wonderful maps for the atlas that we might not have had otherwise.

And more buildings have been done, just not entered in time. My manor (just 1-2 days off completion) and Jerry's 4 level Customs House. So even though they did not make it in time for the competition, they were still spurred on by it.

And Khelaphet city was also a by-product, so Jerry could enter his Sarapeum

Here's the poll to vote for best map. Remember, when voting, please don't just consider the visuals of the map, but also how well it represents the building the mapper reserved. You'll find the reservation requests from all the mappers in the posts above here, except for Jerry's map, which is from Quenten's Khalaphet map, which isn't in the atlas yet, but you can see it in his tale of 2 cities WIP thread.

I'll of course post more challenges later. As I wrote earlier, I am planning to vary the theme a bit though. This time it was floorplans, next time it may be something else. I am very aware that the summer is a quiet period, see that here every year.

    Voting is now over.

Congratulations to Peter Forster for winning the first atlas challenge with his Mooserun Bakehouse. Great map.

And thanks to everyone who participated, still great maps, even if you didn't make first place, only one of those unfortunately.

I'll post a new challenge later, so stay prepared.
