How do I export or save as a jpg a selection from the main map in ft?

Zoom in to the area you wish to save, then do a file -> Save as, and select the appropriate image file type. Note that you must zoom, FT cannot export the selection, exports happens based on the current view.

Does that always give a screen shaped export, or is there a way to choose a square export, for example.

(Sorry Remy - I've just always wondered about that)

It will match the view window in FT. You can always resize the FT window to get other aspect rations, including approximating a square.
