Edit Properties

Just getting started with CC3+ and DD3. I have noticed that if I edit an objects properties, it will change as desired, but if I edit it again, the dialogue doesn't show the properties in their new states, just defaults back to generic "black color", "solid line", "solid fill color", etc.

Why do the actual object properties not show up when using either the Edit Properties or Change Properties?

Comments

  • The properties that show appear to be the default properties selected for new objects (in the bar across the top). If you want it to show the properties of the object you select, you can set those default properties to the object with the eyedropper icon just above Change Properties, then go to Change Properties.

As for why it doesn't show the current properties, it is an implementation choice that is very helpful when working on multiple entities in sequence. You can just set the desired properties up front (the status bar), and when you go to change properties on an entity, you can very easily apply the desired properties just by placing the appropriate checkboxes instead of having to select the value from the dropdown every time. In most cases, it is the properties you are going to set that is the most important, not whatever it was before. (And if you actually need them, just extract them using keep, as taustinoc said above).
This also makes it very easy to set the properties of one object like another, just extract the properties of the template entity, use change properties on the target one, and everything is already filled in properly.

Not to mention, the command is really for changing properties, not displaying them. You can change/set properties on several entities at once, but which values would the dialog show in that case, if the entities you selected had different values?

If you want to see the properties of one or more entities, you can use the LIST command  (Info>List from the menu bar). It's so useful, it's the first command Monsen spotlights in his wonderful Command of the Week series of posts. You can find his detailed description of LIST here.

And, welcome to CC3 and the ProFantasy forum, Conandy!

It's confusing, but any other choice would be equally confusing, and CC is a very complex piece of software. Once you get used to it, this is more efficient.
