CC3 and NaturalEarth world data - Can it be done?

One of the things I need to do is take a real-world map and tweak it - sometimes a little, sometimes a lot - to get the world I want.
I noticed in one of the CC3 blog entries that it is possible to import the maps from NaturalEarth (http://www.naturalearthdata.com/).
I don't see anything, though, about CC3 being actually able to take in the ESRI shape files.
I need to take those files and be able to use CC3 to modify coastlines, add islands, etc.
Has anyone had experience with this? That combined with the modern-world stuff in Symbol Set 3 would seem to be the exact thing I need.

CC3 can't natively import ESRI shape files. However, CC3 can import and export DXF files. Conveniently, the GDAL tool gdalconvert ( http://www.gdal.org ) can convert ESRI shape files to and from DXF files. It can also convert a whole host of other vector GIS file formats. If you're more into a GUI interface, QGIS ( http://www.qgis.org ) is a GUIer thing.
