Red cross symbols, sort of

So, I was messing around with some of the symbols from the July 2008 annual and noticed some odd behavior. The symbols show up just fine in the symbol catalog, but when I select them for placement, the symbol appears under the cursor as a red "X", even on brand new maps with no predefined symbols. However, once the symbol is placed, it reverts to looking like it should (i.e. the red "X" is replaced by the actual png image). Now, this isn't that big of a deal, as it only makes placement slightly more difficult than normal, but I also noticed that when I go through the symbol manager to edit the symbol, the edit window contains a red "X" rather than the image (the symbol manager itself displayed the symbol normally) which makes symbol editing very difficult.

Any idea what's causing this odd behavior and how to fix it?

Never seen this behaviour before. Perhaps you are missing one of the resolutions belonging to the image or something like that.
Have you seen it happen with any other catalogs? You may wish to try to reinstall that particular annual.

This would mean that you're missing certain resolutions of the bitmap, yes. Try re-installing specific issue of the Annual.

Re-installed. That fixed the edit issue, but still seeing the red crosses under the cursor on those maps. I'll check it with a brand new map later. Right now I've got to get back to work. *grumbles*
