Color for Varicolor Symbol

Greetings mapmakers,
I'm trying to add new symbols to a collection, some of those symbols should have varicolors.
The flag in the symbol manager "varicolor symbol" is activated and the symbol appreares as such (has the small rectangle in the current color at the top) but it isn't colored as such.
I guess the image has to contain areas with a specific RGB-code, but I cannot find any information on this.
Does anyone know how to prepare the image to be used in such a way?
