Map of Wheloon

My most recent project using CC3.

The city of Wheloon is situated in Cormyr, kingdom in the Forgotten Realms setting.

Very nice. I especially like the transparencies on the hills giving them a bit of dimension. Ralf has this post stickied on how to post stuff.
  • This is actually a very good map. I like your use of contour lines to show the town "elevating" from the river level. The first FR campaign I ever played in was centered around Wheloon, with a lot of action in the Cormyr region.
  • It is a very attractive map. I don't know if your hands are tied because of the source material from which the map came, but here's something to consider. When animals provided motive force for plowing, most fields tended to follow topography in the length dimension. This avoided the animal having to fight its way uphill every other row.

Before I zoomed in, I thought the light and dark green was connoting topography, but then when I zoomed in and saw the topo lines (nice feature by the way how you used hairlines for that), I no longer understood what the two different green colorations were. If it weren't for the discreet tree symbols, I'd have assumed it was forest and field.

    Very nice map.

Bidmarron: Thanks for the note on field placement. Makes sense but I'd never thought of it before.
I think that the green shading is to give visual clues about the topography -- they appear to be shadows from the hills. At the zoom out level, it's pretty effective (the hill in the upper left corner is especially easy to pick out from this technique).

    Thanks for sharing.
  • Hi there and thanks for the good comments.

THe shading effect i tried to implement are not that well reproduced when migrating the map to the jpg format. In it's CC3 version, we can see a lot better the effect of shaded relief i tried to do. It's not perfect but CC3 is not really designed to push this kind of effect like Photoshop might be. But the challenge was to make everything in CC. I'm sure Ralf could do a lot better with this but i'm just an amateur.

Again, thanks for all the praises. It means a lot.

  • Ah, jpg is lossy. Export as bmp and convert to png. I use Irfanview for such conversions.

Excellent work!I love the clean and simple way to depict woodlands.

Is that so? BMP and PNG keep more details and are of better quality than JPG? Well i'll have to try that. Thanks.

Well thank you sir. I'm always tempted to had more details and more effects on my maps but when comes the time to mark final version on it ... I aalways revert to the more subtle and simple look.

  • Use PNG is better just save it out as a png file at about 2k x 2k

really nice map, based of the 3.5 Wherloon by the looks of it, match's the map of the town in Cormyr: The Tearing of the weave

obviously not 4th edition because Wherloon = Prison town now in 4th edition.. basically the sharites took it over that much that Azoune the 5th built a wall around it and dumps any one who's done bad things into it.. reminds me a bit of escape from new york in that sense.

The map itself is brillent, acruate and extemely well executed for some one who is working
  • oh and pat: you might want to edit your post so in either BBCode or HTML it looks like

    bbcode: [img]http://patoumonde.com/maps/MAP%20-%20Wheloon%20final.JPG[/img]
    html: <img src="http://patoumonde.com/maps/MAP%20-%20Wheloon%20final.JPG">

it'll include your image WITH the post, rather then as a link.. though I'll do a second post in a sec ;)

just posting this so that people don't have to keep going to the link ;) it's same as pat's link above..

    image

(I reduced the width though in the tag so his link above gives a much bigger map !)
again pat really really great map two thumbs up :)
  • Thanks and you are right, the original was in the 3.5E module you mentioned. But i am modifying the map at this very moment and adding details that can be found in Volo's guide to Cormyr from 2E edition. It adds at least 10 named buildings. To be accurate, i also had to get rid of the woodland features because after reading more about the town, the surounding lands are farmlands all over. The woods didn't make sense anymore if i wanted to remain canon.

    Yes, 'shades of Allyn'.

My Crestar site was all jpg and was changed over t png several years ago. They look better.
  • Jim: That's only because Allyn would castrate anyone who used JPG :P lol.

PNG... PNG... I learned that mantra for maps long ago ;)

  • hi pat,

i like your map very much and would suggest to include it on http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Wheloon
to let everybody participate at this brilliant map!
  • Wow, that's a nice map! Is this done pre-City Designer 3?
  • Thank you both for your appreciation. The map was done post CD3 but i must admit that i haven't used that much the new features of CD3. I was eagerly awayting the new version of CD3 and found it very limited in new useful features for me. Since i don't use symbols that much, all the hi res stuff doesn't excite me.

As far as using my map on your site Kasimir, i don'T really have a problem with it. You can pretty much do whatever you want with it.

    Thanks again.
