cannot delete things

I am fairly new to CC3 and struggling, and finding the help files a bit hard to follow.
I have one main issue.
Certain things will simply not be deleted. Typically they are text and various symbols. I do know how to use the delete function and have deleted other stuff successfully with 'delete - right click - do it'. But some things just get totally stuck. Even when I hide every other layer and can only see that type of symbol, they still get stuck. Is it possible they are 'locked' in some way I do not understand? I click in all sorts of ways and they just will not be selected for deletion. Even with the left click method under tools / options, they still won't budge although other stuff nearby gets deleted.

It seems to work fine up to a point and then something changes and from then on I can only delete certain things.
I was working on this map today and it went OK until something went weird and now the only things I can delete and the names 'Lower Swell' and 'Middle Swell,' and a fish symbol in a lake.
Memory issues? Some setting to lock or freeze all components in a map so they cannot be deleted, that I am inadvertently activating? I really do not know what I am doing to make it do this.
As soon as I posted this I noticed the 'layer' dialog under tools / properties and realised they had somehow all been frozen.
Is there some way I might be accidentally freezing all the layers on my maps? I don't know how it is done.
Anyway I think I have solved the problem. If it happens again I know how to fix it.
