Making symbols

So the island map competition got me inspired to start making symbols. I have some art background......way back there and thought why not? The scale bar in my map was created using Inkscapes and the compass rose was done in GIMP. Both are free software and "fairly" easy to learn as there are some very helpful communities that support each of them. Primarily though I am focusing on GIMP and wanted to post up some of the symbols and modifications I have made using it. Let me know what you think any comments are appreciated. Here are the first two from the island competition.

Overall it has been a lot easier for me to learn how to use GIMP over Photoshop, not sure why though. It just seems a bit less intimidating and more intuitive for me I guess.

Thanks, I would agree that so far the tree concept has turned out the best.
