Forum Organization

It might be handy to break up the forums into some broad categories. Topics could include:

Help
Fantasy Map posting
Modern Map Posting
Sci-Fi/Future Map posting
Symbol posting
PNG posting
News
Announcements
General Discussions

Some of these could have sub-categories such as:

Help
-CC3
-DD3
-CD3 (when it is available)
- (other CC3 add-ons when they become available)
-importing CC2 map into CC3
-All CC2
-All CC1 (if anyone is still using it)

Having these broad categories as a starting point for browsing the forums can be a big help later on when traffic really starts to soar.

Wizard Thoarin

  • It's easy to miss, but some categories already exits. Click the categories button at the top and middle of the page.
I don't know if this software supports sub categories.
  • The discussion view, as the default view, then in my opinion can be a pain when trying to find something. When the number of discussions significantly increases over time, the discussion view will be of little use in my opinion.

The discussion view isn't really designed to find anything. It is more designed as a view to easily show you what has been discussed recently, and what is new since your last visit. When you go looking for certain topics, it is far better selecting the appropriate category from the category page.

The search function of this forum is also rather helpful when looking for something. (Search Documentation)

It is at least not the "standard" structure for forums and at the beginning I was a little bit confused until I found out that there is a button for the categories...

An other question: since when does a profantasy-forum exist? I have the impression that the community is rather small and was wondering what the reason might be? And is an offtopic-category missing on purpose?

True, this forum software is a bit "different" than most other forum packages out there. I found it a bit strange at first myself, but after having used it for a while now, I am very pleased with it. Especially for a smaller community where there aren't hundreds of new posts each day, this format is especially nice IMHO.

The forum has been here a couple of months now. The reasons for it's existence is partly the community's desire for a forum. Not everyone was happy with the mailing list format. A forum is also much better suited than a mailing list when trying to search for previously posted information. And yes, there is no off-topic category by design. ProFantasy wishes this to be a forum focussed on Campaign Cartographer/Fractal Terrains & Family, as well as mapping in general.
  • well I like the forum, it's just that a community is stronger affiliated with a forum (and therefor also with the product) as well as with the other users if there is also space for private/oot-discussions. But it's just my personal opinion...

We'll re-evaluate the topic headings in a couple of months' time. I'll look out for suggestions.

  • I would like to say this is a HUGE improvement over the old mailing list and I'm very appreciative for the hosting effort!
