This is for reference for those of us (that's me) who hadn't found the ETOPO1 dataset previously.

It's available on the National Geophysical Data Center.

For FT3 you need the binary format and of those, the 2-byte version is (just a little) easier to import into FT3. So download etopo1_ice_c_i2.zip unto your computer and unzip it. You'll get two files: a bin file (the data) and a hdr file (the header).

Start up FT3, choose File > New > Binary file. Click "Choose Elevation file" and from the button next to file name, load the bin file you just unzipped.

FT3 tells you that it found and used the matching hdr file, but it doesn't interpret it completely. There's a few things you need to do:

1. Set the per-sample info to "2 bytes" (both boxes checked).
2. Put in the correct "Line Width". This is twice the "Width" value, or "43202"
3. the "Map edges" need to be set to -90, -180, 180 and -90, that means the whole globe.

Now click OK and finish the data import. Voila (almost) instant world map at an excellent resolution.
