Vintyri City Symbols

Mark Olivia just posted this announcement regarding their new Cartographic Guide for the Vintyri Symbol sets. These symbol sets contains lots of great city symbols you can use in CC3, and the guide he announces here is a very nice companion to these symbols.
Posted by Mark OliviaUnder the Open Game License 1.0a, the Vintyri (TM) Project has released a new 216-page free PDF booklet, the Vintyri Cartographic Collection Guide.

For those unfamiliar with it, the cartographic collection, it is a free download package of some 1,500 RPG raster symbols or objects (mostly buildings) based upon true historical prototypes and fill patterns or textures. It is available in two versions, one properly scaled for Fractal Mapper (TM) 8 from NBOS Software and the other scaled for Dundjinni (TM) from Dundjinni Enterprises. The Dundjinni version also can be adapted for Campaign Cartographer (TM) 3 from ProFantasy Ltd. Information on how to convert the files for CC3 is included in the new guide.

This publication is in response to requests and suggestions of users of the cartographic collection. It contains:

- Installation instructions for FM8, Dundjinni and CC3.

- Hundreds of color photos of the original historical prototypes used to make the mapping symbols or objects.

- Complete color catalogs of all of the symbols, objects, fill patterns and textures, to make it easy for the cartographer to pick the right object for every map location.

- Details on how to use the symbols and objects in an historically rooted manner that makes the design of cities, towns, villages, hamlets and thorps credible for PCs visiting the mapped locations.

  • Just for everyone's information ....

We are trying to get up a CC3 specific version of our raster symbols and fill styles too. Making FM8 and Dundjinni (TM) versions was a relatively easy matter, because both programs use basically the same system for symbols. CC3 handles raster symbols from a number of angles that are different from FM8 and Dundjinni. This means that producing a true CC3 set of the Vintyri (TM) Cartographic Collection will take a good deal of work and a good deal of time. Nonetheless, we want to get it done. The Vintyri (TM) Project is a non-profit group that's dedicated to making open gaming, open source products. That goal won't be fulfilled, as far as the Cartographic Collection is concerned, until we have a real CC3 version too.

We've had quite a number of E-Mail requests (and some requests at the Cartographers Guild too) for a CC3 version, but a real dearth of volunteers to help out. We now have a volunteer who's willing to start working on this, so with time, we hope to have something for you. The work has started, at least.

There are some issues in working with the existing, non-CC3 versions of the Cartographic Catalog. You should be aware of them:

    1) All of the symbols that have no transparent areas are JPGs (to reduce file size), not PNGs. You need to convert them to PNGs to import them into CC3. If you have no other program with which to do that, you can use the Windows Paint program. You also can install ImageMagick. The current version of CC3 has the installation program for the free ImageMagick program in the folder:

    \ProFantasy\CC3\ImageMagic

    2) The symbols are shadowed. This works well with FM8 and Dundjinni, but it defeats the custom shadowing feature of CC3. This also is one of the reasons why getting out a CC3 version will take some time. I have to dump all the PNG files anew with the shadowing removed. We've started doing that.

    3) Of the two versions that are available, only the Dundjinni version of the Cartographic Collection really is suited for import into CC3. It is at a scale of 1 foot = 40 Pixels, which will let CC3 produce the various resolutions. The FM8 version is ill suited for CC3, because most of the symbols are at a scale of only 1 foot = 10 Pixels.

We're happy that CC3 users are interested in our work. It will be a while before we have a real CC3 version for you. We have only one volunteer. But we're working on it.

If you have questions, feel free to contact us here, at the Cartographers Guild or by E-Mail.
