    Awhile back I have created a varicolor symbol set for CC3 overland maps based on the TrueType dingbat symbols font that comes with the AutoREALM program: http://autorealm.sourceforge.net/index.php

    I thought I'd share this and some of my other symbol catalogs created from TrueType fonts today. As I make more, I'll post them here if folks are interested.

    Today I made a varicolor symbol catalog for CC3 overland maps based on the Jiraijirai TrueType font found on this really cool page of fonts:

    There are quite a few fonts on that site that would make nice symbols, so stay tuned for more... :)

    Here's another varicolor symbol set for CC3 overland maps from the font site in the post above. Yajiri is a collection of solid arrows based on the TrueType font of the same name.

    You know, I'm not sure what the status should be. I don't hold the copyright for any of the fonts I used to make the symbols. The AutoRealm font comes with the AutoRealm program, which is released under the GNU General Public License. The rest are all based on freeware fonts that are available for free download on the Web. Since I do not hold the copyright to the original fonts, I think for now it might be best to just say the are available for personal, non-commercial use.

    If I can find out what the copyright status of my symbols are (since they are derived from the work of others), I would probably just release them into the public domain. But I'm not sure I can even do that yet.

    Thanks for the consideration. It looks like the GNU version allows for commercial distribution, but anything thus produced also becomes subject to the GNU and essentially fully in the public domain. (I'm hesitant to allow others to integrate the artwork into a database and charge for free contributions and organization--hence the one restriction I put on the EULA).

    Not sure about the fonts--several of the ones I've seen on the web come with a readme file, but the majority do not (or they become separated from the readme).

    Keep me in mind if you find out the status.

    This varicolor symbol set for overland maps is based on the Nakht TrueType font found here:

    I really like the hand drawn look of this Egyptian Heiroglyphics font.

    I made a symbol set based on this font which replicates the symbols used by hobos to pass information on to their fellows on the road. They would usually leave these marks in chalk, and I think this font captures that very well. These can be used in overland, city and dungeon maps. The font is attached below, and the CC3 symbols will follow in the next post:

    I had an idea for some symbols (not based on fonts this time) that would work with the John Speed city maps from the annual. I'm hoping to work on those tonight.

    After reading this article online, I had an idea for some new symbols for the John Speed city maps annual from February of 2007: http://makingmaps.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/map-symbols-gibbets-gallows-execution/ Based on this image, I came up with some new symbols that can be used in John Speed City maps: Here's an example of these symbols in use: The attached ZIP file contains the FSC symbol catalog with these eight new symbols I made.

    Thanks guys. :) I miss being able to participate as much as I like at the Guild - it's probably my favorite online community ever. Sadly a full time job and school are killing all my free time :( I do pop in and lurk, and try to vote on all the monthly challenges. Occasionally I even post something. :) I do need to spend more time there participating though. I do spend a lot of my free time when I have it playing with CC3 - I find it relaxing.

    Thanks! I just replaced the zip file of the old school dungeon symbols above with a new version. I wasn't happy with the Treasure Hoard, Battle Site and Shield symbols - it turns out I used the bold version of the font to make them originally, so I redid those with the regular font so they look a little crisper. I also added an Elder Sign font that I traced from an image. :)

    Old School Dungeon Symbols - Deluxe Edition!

    This now includes 40 varicolor fonts for old school dungeon mapping and are compatable with the December 2007 edition of the Cartographer's Annual. I've added control points that will now cut any 1' thick wall on the Walls layer to the 1Way Door symbol, created Open Doorway and Archway symbols (which also cut through walls), added a wall-cutting Portcullis/Bars symbol, created symbols for Open and Covered Pits, symbols for Trap Doors (Floor, Ceiling, and Secret), a generic "T" Trap symbol, two styles of Railings symbols, and a series of Broken Wall symbols (that will also cut through any 1' thick wall on the Walls layer). There are also symbols for Altars, Ladders, Rubble, Wells, Sink Holes, Spider Webs, and other special markings, all inspired by classic old school dungeon maps.

    Since a few of the symbols are derrived from other symbols or fonts, they are free for anyone to use for personal, non-commercial use only.
