Polygon - Trace Issue

I was wondering if any one else had/has this problem and if they do if they can suggest a solution to it Or if Ralph or some one can point out a way to fix it.

When tracing an existing polygon at times using the polygon command... for example, creating a cave map, putting in a water section and wanting to trace the cave 'wall' by hitting 't' when you select the region rather then following the 'shortest' path to the point that you are currently tracing or following the mouse around instead it goes in the complete other direction making it impossible to trace the edge and get the new polygon your after.

I've tried searching the help files etc for information but there is nothing at all on the Trace option within the polygon command.

So any help would be appreciated.

I have always copied the parts of the area to anouther layer, frozen all layers except the one with the copies on it, then cut and trimed till I had the final shap needed, and then used ltp2 or multipoly. After that you move it the layer and sheet that it needs to be on.

Rob, do you have the Annual 2007? You need to click the entity to trace in a certain way to get the directions right. I've talked about it in the very first Annual mapping guide (Mercator style) on page 8.

I'll repost it here if you don't have hte Annual, but it might be less clear without the accompanying pictures.
  • Ralph, I have the Annual, looked at it and it worked... kinda.. I had to do it Backwards for some reason.. every time i did the Click on the entity you want to trace and do it in the direction you want to trace in.. Then click further along in the direction you want to trace it appeared to want to trace in the other direction.....

So i kinda just reversed it and it worked.. annoying but hey it got the job done.. Thanks for pointing me to the annual, I'd forgotten completely about it given it was the start of last year heh.

I checked the Annual mapping guide, and noticed the included picture can be a little misleading. I'm attaching a mini-tutorial in CC3 format to this post. I hope it is helpful.
  • wow old one ;) i've worked it out now have for a while works 99.99% of the time :)

Ah, there was a whisper to me in this thread asking for clarification on trace. I answered publicly because it was of general interest.
